Often when we are creating goals and trying to make changes to our life we hit roadblocks, it’s a part of life.
Things seem to be going smooth then, BAM, there’s something that will get in the way.
Sometimes it’s something big, other times not so much, either way, it leaves you feeling defeated and not sure you should, or can, go on.
“Your resistance is a sign that your system is reconfiguring itself toward success.” Todd Herman
What do you do? How do you find the energy? The strength to keep at something when you are having doubts about your ability? Why should you keep moving forward when it feels like everything is against you?
Well, first of all, we tend to feel the most resistance to the changes we are working on when we are the closest to achieving our goal. Crazy isn’t it?
We’ve all heard that when you exercise your brain releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine to name a few, the same thing happens when you are making positive changes to any area of your life.
We’ve all experienced the elation that comes with something new. Like a new job, car, diet, the gym, etc. You feel like you have the world by the ass, things just seem to flow and feel effortless.
Then everything goes back to feeling normal again, the excitement wears off and you lose the momentum. We’ve all experienced this at some point as well.
This cycle happens out of necessity, I love how Danielle LaPorte describes this in the Desire Map…
“At this point, your new, healthy habits are asking your cells to literally alter their shape. And to you, this feels like a major drag.
But in actuality, your cells are loving it! They are vibrating and shifting, doing their own form of yoga. They’re transforming to accommodate your recalibrated levels of positive mood endorphins. They just need a l-i-t-t-l-e more time to reshape themselves.”
Imagine the impact we would have on our lives and goals if we just gave our bodies that extra time it needs to allow the change to complete.
What could you achieve if you just gave it one more day?
Think about something you really LOVE doing. Something that you gave up (or are considering giving up) because maybe you started to feel fear of failure, or even fear of success (yes, it happens).
What if you gave it another shot? How would succeeding make you feel? And what do you REALLY have to lose if you did fail?
The next time you start to feel resistance like you want to just give up, take a moment to just breathe.
Think about WHY you are trying to make this lifestyle change work, what is your goal. When you have reached that goal how is it going to make you FEEL?
These little reminders may seem too small to work, but they are powerful. And sometimes all you need is that reminder of WHY you set out to accomplish this change to start with.
You can achieve whatever goal you have set for yourself.
Set yourself up for success and reverse engineer that goal into small bite-size chunks that are doable with your current lifestyle.
As always, take action and you can start reaching your goals and make your dreams a reality!
